Hostel: Part II Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More Hostel: Part II Review
10 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: TiM the Zombie

If you know me at all, then you'd know that I'm a huge Eli Roth fan. I think he's a cool dude who makes amazing horror films. Now, with that being said, when "Hostel: Part 2" was announced, being a huge fan of the original, I was immediately hooked. Maybe, even more so than "Grindhouse". As such, I have been following the film very closely, until today, when I finally got the chance to see one of my most anticipated films of the year. Let me just say, I'm glad I did. "Hostel: Part 2" is not only one of the best sequels to a horror film ever, it's one of the best horror films I have seen in years. Absolutely brilliant.

It's a hard task to follow up Derek Richardson's and Jay Hernandez's performance in the first "Hostel", but the leading ladies, certainly pulled it off. Lauren German, Bijou Phillips, and Heather Matarazzo... Hats off to you, you all did great. The male leads, Roger Bart and Richard Burgi, surprised the hell out of me. In a good way. They were both excellent and very convincing. I also loved the cameo from Ruggero Deodato and the return of Paxton from the first film. Overall, I'd give the acting a 10. Couldn't have been better.

This film definately pushes some limits. It's something short of a miracle that Roth sneaked away with an "R" rating. I'm glad too, because otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to see it. Now, without giving to much away, I'm just going to say that there is MORE than enough gore to keep gore hounds satisfied. KNB did a fantastic job with the make-up FX and I don't think it could have turned out better than it did. There are a few scenes, one imparticular, that are sure to be remembered for a while. Even KNB said they had to "look away", which is a huge accomplishment in my book. I mean, if you honestly thought that the torture scenes in "Hostel" were intense, you really haven't seen anything yet. Overall, I'd give the FX a 10. Great job.

I heard somewhere that Roth was trying to top the first one. That he wanted people to walk out of cinema's everywhere and say it's better than the original. You know what I say? I say he achieved that goal. On more than one level. I'm still not sure whether I like it more than the original, but I can say that a lot of aspects are better and are done better. That's all I'm going to say at the moment, because I'm going to cover more in the paragraphs below. So, overall, I'd give the driectors job a 10. Eli Roth has certainly improved as a director, and for those who can't see that, must be blind.

The "look" to the film was excellent. With a bigger budget, Roth was given the opportunity to try different shots and placements, which turned out better than expected and added much more to the finished product.  Overall, I'd give the cinematography a 10. Looked great.

All I can really say about the sound effects and music, is that they were great. The score was perfect for a horror film, while the beautiful singing, placed over a torture montage, added so much more. That's all, really.  Overall, I'd give the sound effects and music a 10. Sounded great.

To rap it up, overall, I'd give the film a 10/10. I can't recommend this film enough. Go see it. Now!
