Alien Vs Predator Review

6 out of 10 Skulls

"Resident Evil" director Paul W.S. Anderson fills the screen with some decent action and special-effects in this corny "b-movie" popcorn flick. The most disappointing aspect is the lack of fight scenes between the two infamous creatures. In this regard, the title is a bit misleading. And on top of that, the movie is rated PG-13! Sacrilage! This is an insult to the fans of the franchises. Excessive blood and guts are to be expected in any movie starring the alien or the predator. However, the film is watchable and is bit more entertaining than the last two "Alien" entries.

In Antartica, an expedition team composed of scientists and archeologists dig up a centuries-old pyramid temple. Unfortunately, the site happens to be an ancient battleground where the predators duke it out with the aliens as part of a seasonal hunting ritual. Eventually, the humans get caught in the middle and are killed off one-by-one. The cornball final act finds a lone female survivor siding with a predator in a fight to the death with the alien queen.

The film is stuffed with great-looking visuals and the claustrophobic setting of the pyramid brings to mind the Canadian sci-fi classic "Cube". I did like the photography and the action-scenes are skillfully directed. In addition, the special-effects are quite dazzling. However, the PG-13 rating hurts things and so does the goofy final act. The final shot is in a word: silly. Still, I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously. Blink and you might miss "Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman" playing on a television set in the background!
