Small Town Folk Movie Review
Written by: Goon Small Town Folk hit me like a ton of bricks. I had heard the buzz surrounding the film but I never really gave the film a closer look other than maybe watching the trailer. But now that I have had the pleasure of watching the film I am glad I didn't dig to deep into the film. Its that feeling of something that comes out of left field and makes you say "wow" they really did a great job of making this film on a low budget look much much better than it could have turned out. With some trippy green screen effects and a nice fantasy/comedy edge this flick is something that I promise you have never seen before. Just for a second imagine if Terry Gilliam took acid and wrote a horror script. That is what you get with Small Town Folk. The story begins when couple, Jon and Susan are lost while traveling on a deserted stretch of road on an "adventure" as Jon likes to call it. Soon he is forced by his wife, of course, to stop and ask for directions from a pair of odd looking fellows on the side of the road. As soon as they approach the haggard man he realizes something is very wrong with the guy. Soon out of nowhere fuckin Warwick Davis pops up out of a sack on the guys back and tells them not to go anywhere near a little town called Grockleton. But to continue on there route and they will soon find there way. Well like any man out for an adventure he heads straight to Grockleton. On the other side of town we meet Helmet as he so affectionately called by his peers. Together they all travel into the woods near Grockleton for a little pre-marital sex and fun. Well little did they know at the time but when you step foot into Grockleton territory you may never find your way out. The Landlord soon rounds up his cronies and sets out to hunt down both the husband and wife and whomever else is caught on his land. Of course his help consists of some of the most twisted looking characters in the film. To really get a grasp of what you are getting yourselves into picture the Spierig Bros. Undead combined with Just Before Dawn and add some inspiration from Terry Gilliam. A fantasy/comedy/horror film with punch from the U.K. If you have ever seen Freak Out several folks from that film are carried over but I must say I enjoyed this film much more. The jokes aren't as over the top and the red is flowing. There is also a very cool group of hunters in this film that are wearing what looks like Slipknot masks. Some of my favorite parts of this movie are not really that long but feature Warwick Davis chewing up the scenery. I really enjoyed his "cameo" role as he always knocks it out of the park. He was really made for this role as the red herring of the film. Another aspect of the film that was very well done once again was the folk music used for the film. Some great stuff and I only wish they would release a sound track for this flick. Some of these songs are just so damn funny you want to just playback the credits at the end to hear the song again. Vulgar? Yes, but very entertaining to say the least. Most of the film is shot on a green screen and that said it clearly shows but it doesn't hurt the film that much. You really recognize what they set out to do and they really pulled off a fantastic horror/fantasy/comedy without to many bumps along the way. Small Town Folk is a film that set very high standards for itself and met those standards given the budget it was allowed. With some fun blood and gore, over the top action and some interesting looking killers this is something to keep your eye out for.
