Halloween (2007) Review
Written by: House of Pain Ok, Halloween 2007, where do I start. I think I'll start with what I liked about the original Halloween. I remember watching Halloween as a kid for the first time and I had to turn off the sound because it was so damn scary to me. I eventually watched it full on later, but I'll never forget the impact the sound had on the movie. What also made that movie scary to me was the pace.... It really allowed me to get to know the characters and get scared and feel the suspense when Michael was tracking someone down. There was hardly any blood, not much cursing that I can recall and just a pure scary movie. NOW, Halloween 2007.... I have to say that I am a huge RZ fan.... House and Rejects are two of my favorite movies and I love what Rob did with those two films. When I heard he was doing Halloween, I really liked the idea mainly because I wanted to see Michael again in a movie and I knew it would be interesting with Rob at the helm. Sadly though the score wasn't scary to me and the pace was so fast that it was hard to keep track of at times. Although I did really enjoy this movie, I feel it fell short in a few places. First of all, I think it should have been a prequel and a re-imaging as it was originally panned as.... rather then a 1st act prequel, 2nd act partial remake and a third act that was a point by point retelling.... but in a bad connect the dots fashion. I'm not sure where the train fell of the tracks during production and I didn't read the leaked script, so I don't know how much was changed from Rob's vision. I have to admit that I did see the working print from May, and it wasn't better then the theatrical version, but had some better elements to it. In the theatrical version, I didn't like the ending at all..... It really dragged on in the last 15 mins and felt like it had no purpose. I don't like how Rob made sure that there couldn't be another installment without some ingeniously creative writing. And the second act with his escape felt like it was thrown together in a last thought and didn't flow well to me. From watching the early print, its obvious that there was a lot to be fixed and from watching the theatrical version, it looks like they still had a bit of tweaking to do but ran out of time. I was hoping for a full Rob Zombie movie, and feel I only got a small portion of that. What he did with the beginning act and partially the 2nd act, I really enjoyed.... I like Rob's very gruesome and real take on violence. I could have done without the quick cutting and jerky camera moves, but would have still enjoyed a complete RZ vision if that's what had been shot.... Instead I feel like the studio stepped in and screwed up the second half of the movie and ordered re shoots. This is dragging on a bit, and I apologize as this is my first review..... Overall, there is a good movie I feel somewhere within all the dimension footage from the early print and the theatrical release... whether we get to see that, I doubt it, but i do look forward to the dvd, the making of, and all the deleted scenes. Will I watch it again, hell yeah...... Is it better then the original, No... If you wanted a play by play review here, I'm sorry... if you were expecting a brand new Halloween franchise, You're out of luck there too as well.
