Halloween (2007) Review
Written by: TheDemon **WARNING**--ONE PERSON'S OPINION. I have waited (along with thousands of others I'm sure) for Rob Zombie's version of what I feel is the all-time classic horror movie, i.e. Halloween. Originally done in 1978 by John Carpenter, the original told a story of what was originally defined as the "non-killable" killing machine. Shot on a shoestring budget with no named actors (at the time, Jamie Lee Curtis was still cutting her teeth), that movie brought us REAL terror and REAL frights. Being an even bigger fan of Zombie's after his "Devil's Rejects" movie, I just COULDN'T wait. And then I went to see Rob Zombie's version.... Rob Zombie said from the get-go that his would be his own version; he wasn't out to do a remake per se. Well goody for him. This review isn't going to be a personal attack on Mr. Zombie. He did what he thought he had to do (I suppose), but what showed up on the screen was a complete, utter, gaggingly bad hodgepodge of filmmaking at its worse. Zombie, as stated earlier, wanted to do HIS version. Instead of injecting any life into his version instead he opted for trying--albeit very feebly--to give his audience a glimpse into what made Michael Meyers a ruthless killing machine. And how does he go about doing that? By using every stereotypical bad cliche he could get his mind around. Let's see, Michael comes from a family who puts the DYS in dysfunctional: mother's a stripper liviing with a low-life abusive boyfriend. She has two other children; a horny teenage daughter who constantly makes fun of poor Michael, who at the start of the film has just killed his pet hamster and is into wearing masks to "hide the ugly inside of him". Hey Rob: here's a thought: if you wanted to do something ORIGINAL, why not have Michael come from an uppercrust (or at least common) family? I'm not going to say anything more about this mess. One of the ushers at the theater told me that some people had left the movie "in tears" because they were so scared. Actually, I don't think that had ANYTHING to do with why they were in tears. I, too, was in tears because I had yet again wasted time and money on yet another piece of garbage. This is a shining example of why "classics" should be left alone. This movie had no originality, but I am glad that Rob decided to give the entire cast of "The Devil's Rejects" another paycheck. Shame on you, Rob Zombie, and shame on YOU, John Carpenter, for letting him butcher one of the greatest horror movies ever made. This is a community member review and not a staff member review. We appreciate and respect the opinions of our readers and are gratefull that they took the time to contribute it.
