30 Days of Night Review

9 out of 10 Skulls

With all the horrible remakes and torture-porn films that have been coming out over the last few years, I was eager to see 30 Days of Night. I am happy to say it was well worth the wait. 30 Days looks terrific; the setting, atmosphere and overall look of the film is stunning. All of the actors gave good performances. Mark Boone Junior stood out as he always does. The real stars were the vampires though. Most especially Danny Huston as the lead vampire. His performance ranks among the best film vampires I have seen, and I've seen a lot.

My only complaint with the film is the lead actress. As one of the few survivors hiding from the vampires, she is somehow the only person who manages to keep her hair brushed and makeup intact for the duration of the siege. Also, while every human in the film is bundled up in thick parkas, she is in a comparatively skimpy outfit that wouldn't keep someone warm in summer let alone during an Alaskan winter. Her character seemed phony compared to the rest. Regardless, I was able to overlook her and enjoy the rest of the movie.

All in all, if you enjoy horror, vampires and excellent gore effects, then be sure to see 30 Days of Night. It is a fresh, original take on the vampire film. I sincerely hope more horror films like this get made in the future.
