Land of the Dead Review
Written by: Ash's missing hand
In the near future world of "Land of the Dead", zombies have started to evolve. The zombies don't simply lurch around simply to eat people. They have learned to communicate on a very basic level, to make simple plans, and to learn from their torment. The humans have developed a class system. Those with lots of money live in Fiddler's Green, a luxury high-rise where all their needs are catered to. Other survivors huddle at the base of the building, the city has been barricaded to keep the zombies out. Mercenaries stage raids in a giant armored truck called "Dead Reckoning".
Cholo (John Leguizamo) wants to move into Fiddler's Green. He is of the best mercenaries under the employ of Kaufman (Dennis Hopper). Kaufman is the Donald Trump of Fiddler's Green. Cholo works under Riley (Simon Baker) who is the leader of Kaufmans mercenary force and is the hero of the movie. Riley is responsible and calm and Cholo is the opposite. There is Slack (Asia Argento) a hooker who is thrown into a pit of zombies and left to fend for herself.
Kaufman's powerhold on the city is upset when he refuses Cholo's request to move into Fiddler's Green. Cholo steals Dead Reckoning and the zombies start to organize. Big Daddy (Eugene Clark) begins to develop intelligence. It is always a great day when Romero returns to the genre he invented.
