The Mist (2007) Review
Written by: sc0rpi0n7 The film is based on Stephen King's novella “The Mist”. About a little town that is hit by a terrible storm that knocks out power and phone lines during the night. The next morning David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his son Billy Drayton (Nathan Gamble) head into town with their neighbor Brent Norton (Andre Braugher) to get supplies. While they are at the local food store a strange mist begins to pour in from the mountains surrounding the town. As they watch the mist cover their town Dan Miller (Jeffrey DeMunn) comes running up to the food store claiming that there is something in the mist, and that it carried away someone he knew. One of the men in the store refuses to believe what Dan Miller is saying and decides to run to his car, he makes it to his car just as the mist overtakes him and he and his car vanish from site. Then the people in the store begin to hear his screams coming from the mist covered parking lot. They quickly close and lock the doors. Panic then takes over the group as one after another then begin to be killed off by the creatures in the mist. A religious woman named Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden) begins to spread her own beliefs about what is happening, claiming that it is all Gods will and that there must be a sacrifice for the sins of humankind. This escalates until she decides that little Billy Drayton must be that sacrifice, and with her religious ranting she had managed to convince almost everyone in the store that she is right. A small group of people manage to escape from the store and head out into the mist. Review: I went to this movie full of doubt, I had heard the audio book but I didn’t believe that the movie would follow the book very closely as most book adaptations don’t. However I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised as the movies does follow very closely to the book. The incredible acting from this veteran crew added greatly to the overall outcome of this great film. Added with the special effects which were not over the top and lighting and audio that were great I have to say that this is one of my favorite movies this year. Thomas Jane lives up to his normal standards of acting and with Marcia Gay Harden, Andre Braugher, Jeffrey Demunn and Frances Sternhagen adding their great talents to the movie the only possible outcome was a great movie. Writer/Director Frank Darabont is no stranger when it comes to Stephen King adaptations as he also wrote and directed such great movies as The Green Mile, The Shawshank Redemption and The Woman in the Room and once again he shows his brilliance here keeping the movie going at a fast paced action thrill ride that keeps you guessing what is going to happen next. If you can’t tell from my review above I really enjoyed this movies and recommend seeing it as soon as possible. This is a community member review and not a staff member review.
