Jaws is a very effectice action/thriller movie that works extremely well because the characters have been developed into people we get to know and care about.
The story is well known. A series of attacks on swimmers by a great white shark, the resort island threatened by a loss of tourism, and the attempt by three men to track the shark and kill it. The three men and the shark make up the heart of this movie. There is Brody (Roy Scheider) the police chief who came from New York to the island to get away from the madness of the city. There's Quint (Robert Shaw) a crusty seafarer whose hatred of sharks is personal. And there's Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) the rich kid who knows exactly what a shark can do to a man. Then there is the shark. Some of the footage in the movie is of an actual great white shark, the rest is a mechanical shark patterned on the real thing.
Jaws is an excellent adventure movie. It is every bit as scary as The Exorcist, but in a different way. It has as much gore as it needs but none extra. It is a good story and is brilliantly told. One of Spielbergs earliest and best movies. It stands the test of time.
