Sunshine DVD Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

This movie I had to think long and hard on whether or not its horror, or just a scifi thriller. The direct answer is no, this is not horror. The indirect is yes it is horror. So I have opted for the indirect and am reviewing it. Sufficed to say Danny Boyles has put together a top notch cast of character actors and delivers on a truly believable and intense sci-fi thriller.

Fifty years from now, the sun is dying, and mankind is dying with it. Our last hope: a spaceship and a crew of eight men and women. They carry a device which will breathe new life into the star.

But deep into their voyage, out of radio contact with Earth, their mission is starting to unravel. There is an accident, a fatal mistake, and a distress beacon from a spaceship that disappeared seven years earlier. Soon the crew is fighting not only for their lives, but their sanity.

Overall I have to say that Danny Boyles has proven that he is more then just a one trick pony and can do much more then just re-invent the zombie genre like he did with 28 Weeks Later. Sunshine is not your typical sci fi thriller. In most you have a group of scientists out in space who act like complete idiots doing things you would never do. We are out here to save the world but lets detour off course to rescue a friend, or risk manking for  a hot face sandwich. The characters and what they do in this film are quite real and I do not once get the feeling 'nobody would really do that'. Danny Boyles is very good at building atmosphere and then not taking detours that insult your intelligence.

For a good 3/4's of this film it is nothing but scifi action with a body count that builds as you go thanks to the greatest villain of them all.. space. But the vaccuum of space is not the only evil that lurkes the crew. I wont tell you what happens since it is a very cool twist but I can tell you its gorey, the death count is VERY high and you will get to see a limb get ripped off, a man frozen in space, then incinerated by the sun and oh so much more. Overall I have to say Danny Boyles has done it again and if you like 2001 A Space Odyssey and love the scifi genre you will love this movie.
