Boy Eats Girl DVD Review

Goon also got a copy of this DVD and will be reviewing it so be sure to read his take. We have quite differing tastes. Boy Eats Girl is a zombie movie with a difference. It has the traditional Romero zombie and it has the voodoo zombie. Its a very unique take. Unfortunately the movie that is billed as being in the grain of Shaun of the Dead is far from it.
Seventeen year-old Nathan is in love with Jessica but he just can't pluck up the courage to ask her out. To make matters worse, Samson the school bully is convinced that Nathan is making moves on his flirtatious girlfriend, Cheryl. Then Jessica and Nathan's best friends take matters into their own hands and set them up on a date. However, thanks to the interference of Jessica's disapproving father, the plan falls apart. Mistakenly led to believe that Jessica is going all the way with local lothario Kenneth, Nathan ends up drunk and alone in his bedroom. One careless, but fatal, accident later.
But Nathan's mother Grace is not about to let her son go. Seizing upon an old voodoo book she has discovered in the local church, Grace performs a restorative ritual on Nathan and brings him back to life. When he wakes up, Nathan is none the wiser. Except that now he can't feel any pain, he has no pulse and he has a strong desire to eat human flesh.
Boy Eats Girl is not a bad movie and in fact if your a zombie fan I encourage you to check it out. As of writing this I am the first reviewer to say anything negative about it so alot of fans obviously like it. My problem is not that the movie really has a problem so much as it does nothing. It moves slowly, the laughs are hollow and it just lacks any sort of passion. It comes off like the filmmakers set out to do Shaun of the Dead and the formula didnt pan out. Like making bread and forgetting the yeast this zombie movie isnt bad per say but its not a shining star of the genre either. Comparing this movie to Shaun of the Dead, this movie doesnt compare. But compare it to Day of the Dead Contagium and you have a winner. I think this zombie movie sits firmly in the not scary, not overly funny but also not horrible category.
If you enjoy indie zombie movies I have no doubt you will love this movie. The acting is reasonable, the characters are not completely hollow and for the most part the special FX are well done. If you are into splashy mainstream big budget films you might be dissapointed. I would say die hard zombie fans buy it or rent it. If your new to the zombie genre dont make this one your first. Not a bad movie, but not a good movie. I would say its a rental at best for the average horror consumer.
