Dark Water Review

6 out of 10 Skulls

This movie is a remake of a 2002 thriller by Hideo Nakata, whose work inspired the "Ring" movies. Dahlia Williams (Jennifer Connelly looking hot) is splitting up with her husband Kyle (Dougray Scott), and needs to find a new home for herself and her daughter Ceci (Ariel Gade). The house hunt takes her to Roosevelt Island, where a real estate agent named Murray (John C. Reilly) shows them an apartment.

The superintendent (Pete Posthelwaite) silently lurks in his cubicle at the end of the dark entrance hall. Murray promises a new coat of paint for the apartment and when he can't find the second bedroom he redefines the living room as "dual use". (been there) Cici thinks the building is yucky, but the rent isn't much and Dahlia is desperate. She takes the apartment and notices a stain in the ceiling that seems alive.

A trip upstairs reveals horrible things. Dahlia has abandonment issues and seems to have very few friends. Who is the invisible friend Cici has made? What happened in this building? The third act of the movie answers these questions. The roles in this movie have been filled by very skilled actors. The end of the movie is overdone and I'm still not sure how everything fits together. By the end of the movie, I began to care for the characters, so the movie worked for me enough that I didn't hate it.
