Hatchet - Unrated Version Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

I waited with great anticipation for the DVD release of this movie since it never played anywhere CLOSE around here when it was released on September 7.

I had a good time watching the film and the "extras" that come with the DVD.  I now know that Adam Green, actors, and crew had an absolute BLAST making this film, and it showed in the final product.  Distributed as "old school horror," Hatchet delivers what any 80s fan of horror wants:  LOTS of blood and gore, GREAT character acting, and many gartuitous shots of naked breasts.  It also gives us another "face" in that long line of memorable characters, i.e. Victor Crowley.  I would like to take this time to give a HUGE shout-out to Kane Hodder (a/k/a the man behind Jason Voorhees).  He was great as Victor Crowley, a vengeful spirit trapped between worlds and hell-bent to avenge both his and his father's pain inflicted by town locals.  And like him or hate him, Marilyn Manson and Goldfrapp do one hell of a GREAT job is "This is the New Shit."  It kicks ass, and gives the movie a hard-edge feel from the get-go.

My only problem with the movie--and it is a very MINOR one--is that I would have liked to have seen Victor possess more human qualities.  No, I'm not asking that he be portrayed as a wimp, but, hell, you've got the entire movie to turn him into complete evil.  When his character was introduced, he was just "there."  Director Adam Green stated he wanted his horror movie and "R" and maybe that's why he went over the top here.  And for all of his deformities, he sure could move fast.

All in all, however, this movie can now be added to movies that I own, and I'm very proud to say that.  Director Green (in his interview) said something about "...when Hatchet 2 is released...".  I just wonder when that will happen??!!!
