Hatchet Review
Written by: DeathbyHighKick
Hatchet, one of those horror films that suceed where others fail....dropping the "serious horror" that movies such as "The Hills have Eyes 1 & 2" have and bring some humor into the mix, not to mention an off the wall deformed psychopathic redneck named Victor Crowley, with explict gore and tons of boobies....
Before I began watching Hatchet, I knew it had already gained noriety for being a movie that the hardcore fans will no doubt add this to their collection, saying this.....I knew it'd either be a hit or miss with me. While I consider myself a "hardcore fan of the horror genre", I was let down by movies like "Slither", which has its own cult following behind it. Okay, onto the movie itself...
HOWEVER....all my doubts were cast aside when the opening scene has Robert Englund in it, I don't care what movie the guy does, he's one of my horror icons and he's always given a heartbeat to even the shittiest movies *cough Urban Legend cough*. He's obviously known for his Freddy Krueger character, and it's nice to see him in different roles, without the brown fedora hat and knived glove. The rest of the cast did suprisingly well, you've got the typical characters to include the "All around nice guy", "Skeptic best friend/token black guy", "misunderstood quiet hot chick who's not trying to be hot", "the ditzy, boob showing bimbo's", "the always gonna die no matter what old couple", and a few others that are simply there to provide a body count. Nothing out of the ordinary right there, aside from the fact that in most horror movies, these characters try not to be these stereotypes, whereas in Hatchet, they don't give a shit and welcome it. Every role in this movie served a solid purpose, and I commend the director and actors for being able to fully jump into this knowing that.
Now, I've gotta give props to Kane Hodder, the guy is just amazing in these roles, and I personally think that Victor Crowley is his best since Jason....I don't think in all the horror movies I've seen with Hodder in it, he's shown his actual face....I like that, I really like that. He doesn't give a shit about seeing himself in People magazine or on the Oprah show...he's a big tall guy who plays monsters and psychopaths...that's it, but he does it so well, anytime I get the opportunity to see something with him in it, I'm always happy.
I honestly don't know what else to say.....the gore is intense, some of the most memorable deaths scenes in quite a while, I think anyone just looking to enjoy a bloody head twisting eyeball popping limb removing movie with some great horror icons should definitely check it out.....I gave this a 9/10 for all the reasons listed above, the only reason it didn't get a perfect ten, is that those are reserved for the absolute best of the best (i.e. The Thing, A Nightmare on Elm Street). Thinking down the road, 20 years from now....and in 100% complete honesty....Hatchet is just gonna be another cheesy ass film with an over-abundance of blood and violence. It's still great though, so check it out!
