The Cellar Door Review
Written by: Meh I had a chance to check out a screener copy of The Cellar Door over the christmas holidays and have to say I was quite impressed. Yet another indie horror film that is sure to please the fans of throw back horror. You will recall I just watched HATCHET finally and felt it was also a throw back to Evil Dead and other gorey classics. Well The Cellar Door is also a throwback but this one is a throw back to such classics as Paul Lynch's The Keeper. Good writing, creepy visuals and a tight knit story that isnt tame but also isnt an over the top splatter fest. The premise of the film goes like this; Rudy, a strong-willed woman, awakens in a small wooden cell. Herman, a deranged serial killer who looks like your mother's accountant, slips some food into her cell. He collects women, keeping little mementos of them, like hair, urine, and blood. For the next several weeks he keeps Rudy locked in her cell in the basement of his house. Everybody thinks she is dead; there is no hope of rescue. Herman tries to torment Rudy into loving him. Out of desperation, she begins to play along with his perverse notions of love. How far must she go to survive...? Although I compared this movie to Paul Lynch's The Keeper which starred Dennis Hopper and Asia Argento this cast of small names with a smaller budget did not directly knock off the film. The whole premise of the film is similar but also distinct. It relies on great shooting to make up for what I would assume is a low filming budget from the look of the film to give you a film that is creepy voyeuristic and has the makings to be a fan favorite. Michelle Tomlinson who plays Rudy in the Film I might add is way hotter then Asia Argento for those guys reading who like to know their is some hot booty in the flick. Michelle reminds me of Asia in a big way in the way she carries her scenes and her overall look accept to me she is more talented and more attractive which are both bonuses in the world of show biz. I liked her character and her portrayal of the role. I would not be surprised at all to hear that the filmmakers are fans of The Keeper or Asia Argento from this character. As I said visually the film is very well done, the use of imagery to carry the story over dialogue is what makes this film stand out. Alot of horror films need dialogue to drive the story and this movie showcased the talent of the filmmakers by going beyond that. This is also not an Art film or Yuppy Horror. Its gruesome at parts and definitely delivers what horror fans want.. snappy dialogue, great fx and some blood and carnage in various forms. I would say this movie is a definite rental for all horror fans and a buy for fans of classic horror... especially if you liked The Keeper!
