The Monster Squad Review

Some 80's kids movies suck ass. Some 80's kids movies kick ass. Thankfully, "The Monster Squad" is the latter of the two.
Following two years in the wake of The Goonies, I can see how this was seen as a ripoff, and completely overlooked. It has been lacking a DVD release, and has only in the last year gotten one, in response to the largely growing cult fan base.
Sean, Patrick, and Horrace (The Fat Kid), are all best 12 year old friends. They have a completely, more amazing than awesome clubhouse (like, seriously, its the coolest goddamn tree fort I have ever seen!), and all are part off their inner, untitled group, that all share a common love for the classic Universal Monsters. One day, Seans mom finds an old dairy of Van Helsings at a garage sale ("thats the guy that fights godzilla right?" she asks) and gives it to Sean. Unfortunately, its completely in german.
Meanwhile, Dracula, the real Dracula, is gathering his small posse of monsters. He finds the wolf man, the mummy, gillman, and Frankensteins monster. He gathers them all to help him gain control of the world, by using an amulet, that has one chance to be smashed every 100 years. If it is, evil will gain control of the world.
Back home, Sean tells his friends about strange things happening at the police station where his dad works. A mummy is stolen from a museum, and a crazy man claims he is a werewolf. He finds these coincidental enough to believe that real monsters are gathering. The friends take Van Helsings diary to The Scary German Guy ( I kid you not, this is what they call him, and you never know his real name) and he kindly translates. Coincidentaly, it tells of how to stop Dracula from destroying the amulet, and it says his last attempt at it was 100 years ago tommorow. So the friends band together with the local tough and cool kid to fight monsters, and become.... The Monster Squad! hell yeah.
The movie definately deserves its cult status. It has pretty great makeup effects on the monsters, and the kids act really well, actually like real children (shocking)! By the way, its hilarious! The movie has many funny moments, and is completely quotable. "Wolfman's got nards!". And Frankenstein's monster even takes a nude picture of the girl next door. This movies definately worth a look so check it out!
