30 Days of Night (2007) Review

I had been looking forward to seeing this film for months and I wasn't disappointed - I loved it! I like vampires anyway but these are not the stylish, sexy, goth vampires of late, they are ugly, blood-soaked and scary looking - especially the little girl vampire who is downright freaky!
The tension is built up right from the start as the town is cut off from the outside world, with nowhere to go and no way to get there, and continues as people start being picked off, one by one.
I've not been that impressed by Josh Hartnett in the past but he plays more than just a pretty boy here, he actually acts and is very convincing as the Sheriff struggling to save his family and the rest of the town from being next on the menu.
This has some jumpy moments and a decent amount of gore, caused mainly by the piranha-esque teeth biting anything that moves in the darkness.
The only thing which stopped this getting a higher rating is the ending, which felt like a cop-out to me, written specifically with a sequel, and most probably a prequel, in mind.
Don't be put off by that though, the rest of the film more than makes up for it.
