The Host (Gwoemul) (2007) Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

I saw the dubbed version of this and I think it would probably have been better to see the original with subtitles as some of the voices were very fake.  This film is like an extension of the 'crocodiles in the sewers' tales but it is very well done and tells the story of a disfunctional family trying to save the life of the youngest child who has been taken by the monster.  The monster itself is CGI and I found myself spending a lot of time trying to decide what animal it's movements are based on as they were the most realistic aspect of it.

Despite the storyline, I wouldn't say this was a horror, as it's not scary at all.  It has some funny moments but  a few times, these ventured into slapstick type humour which I personally find really annoying but it didn't spoil the story too much.   The young girl is very well played and is a lot fiestier than your average horror film victim.  The film also has some genuinely moving moments which made me glad I was watching this by myself so my reputation as a heartless bitch can remain intact :o)
