Bio Zombie Review
Written by: moviemaven
This is basically a Japanese version of Dawn of the Dead on a much smaller scale with dreadful effects, painful acting and atrocious subtitles that do not in the least match the dubbing. Okay, so it takes place in a mall and there are zombies. I guess the similarities end there.
Woody and Crazy Bee (or just Crazy or just Bee whether you read it or listen to it) are two slackers who work in a DVD store in the mall. It is actually more like a pirate shop at the flea market, but it does have some neon and a parking garage. They appear to do little more all day than hit on chicks who want no play, get into fights they can't back up and run errands. They pick up their boss' car from the mechanic's and run into some trouble along the way. Little do they know the guy they pick up is carrying something rather sinister in his briefcase leftover from an Iraqi arms deal that went south. They head back to the mall with him in the trunk so they can goof off some more with the spa hotties and pick fights with the cell phone guy and his sorely mistreated but loving wife. Soon there are some zombies and some people die and stuff.
The effects are abyssmal on a grade school level (was that papier-mache?) and the acting is mostly bad. But then I wouldn't really know because the dubbing is so off-putting. I almost turned it off but then remembered I can' t really do that if I am going to review it so I persevered. I was glad that I did in the end. And I truly believe it may have been almost good in the original language.
Who knew that the characters (well some of them) would grow on me and I would end up having a good time? Woody turns from a creep into a rather convincing hero and Crazy Bee is slapstick hilarious through the entire thing. There are some WTF moments, true enough, but there are also some intentional comedic scenes that had me laughing out loud.
I cannot stress that you should see it. I would get way too much hate mail if I did that. The backlash would be horrendous. But if you are a zombie lover who also digs quirky comedies and requires very little from a film, you should give it a watch if you stumble over it. You might just find you are having more fun than you bargained for.
And if you do see it, please watch the trailers on the DVD. They were my favorite part. These are some baaaad movies and I promise you will laugh. GAppA! Gappa angry!
