[REC] Review

10 out of 10 Skulls

[REC], in my humble opinion, is the best horror film in years. It takes a very simple premise of a TV reporter and cameraman following a pair of firemen to what should be a routine call into a brilliant and atmospheric jolt-a-minute horror film. This...(read more) near perfect film takes a dash of brilliance from here and there in the world of horror and executes so well. I'm a huge horror fan although I never get scared and am rarely ever unsettled during the watching of a film. Well, I must admit I have been defeated by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza.

This film is scary and unsettling. This isn't just one of those random jumps on screen to try and scare you. It's downright fucking creepy and startling. Upon trying to think of WHY it's so effectively scary I came up with a few things. First, the setting choice is fantastic. This apartment really has a moody and dismal feel to it. Next, it's well shot. You always run the risk of overdoing the shaky cam in a first person film. Cloverfield was said to have overdone it (I found it to be ok).

This film definitely knows when to employ this technique and when to not. It's also very beautifully shot for the type of film it is. This film just kind of instills a hopeless feeling into the viewer as well. The zombies are also terrifying creatures. Especially that last one. Good lord. It's a shame that this film won't receive as much notoriety as it deserves. Hollywood is already remaking it and it hasn't even seen the light of day in some countries! If you get the opportunity to watch this film, do so. You won't regret your decision.
