Awake Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

I have managed to watch another horror over the weekend, well to be honest I have watched about another 4 or 5. I sat down to watch Awake not knowing what to really expect as I have heard multiple things about the movie in regards to what genre it actually is. Personally I think classifying this as a horror is doing both the movie and the genre a great injustice. This would fit more in as a psychological thriller/horror.

The basis for the movie is a man who goes in to have surgery and does not get put fully under so he is actually concious during the surgery and can still hear and feel but is unable to move. There is not blood, gore, or gratuitous booby scenes so I cannot classify it as a true horror. BUT if you are going in for surgery anytime soon then maybe this would hit a nerve, especially when the surgeon makes the first cut on the chest and the patient is still concious.

The whole story behind the movie is hard to explain without giving away the actual movie so I will not give much as to what is happening, don't like ruining a film for other buffs. One thing that I can state though is that this man is filthy rich and while in the operating room he hears how everything has been planned for him to die on the operating table.

This could be taken as a bit scary since he hears how he will die, but due to the drugs he is only able to hear and not able to react to prevent his own demise.

The acting in the movie was good, but this is something which should be expected at all times from Hollywood films due to the amount of money that is paid out. The same can be stated in regards to the director, writer, producer, and all the other staff required to get the picture to screen. With this in mind it is harder for what I classify as a big release to get higher marks they will have to be a lot better.

All in all this is a good film to watch and seems to go by pretty quick unlike some films which just seem to drag on. I would recommend although you can wait for DVD as the cost of the cinema tickets and refreshments are more than the movie is worth.
