Alien Vs Predator: Requiem (Unrated) 2007 Review
Written by: skfan
Will we ever get an Alien vs Predator film that lives up to the original Alien or Predator films? Probably not. Especially if "Requiem" is any inclination of what the highly successful series are becoming.
For gore hounds I'm sure you won't be as disappointed as you surly were in the first AVP but you still won't be satisfied because the gore just doesn't stand up even in the unrated dvd and the deaths are far and few between. Before I get into my review I will warn you that I will be revealing key plot points that I had problems with so..."Spoiler Alert!"
In the first AVP film there were just too many problem to mention and besides the gimmick of seeing the Alien and Predator fighting for the first time the film was awful. As a final slap in the face in the first one an Alien burst out of the chest of a dead Predator on their ship. Now the first problem I had with that was how the hell would the infected Predator get back on the ship when throughout the film they had shown that the Predator had special vision in their helmets and could see a growing Alien inside of a human. Besides that these are an advanced species that have dealt with these Aliens for a long time so wouldn't they be aware of the risks and make sure one doesn't get on the ship? And finally when the Alien bursts out of the Predator it doesn't look like the normal Alien. Instead it has the same jaw as a Predator which implies that the Aliens actually mutate and take things from their hosts biological make up but if this was true then why don't the Alien that infect humans share any of our characteristics?
Now sure this was all in the last five minutes of the first film and has really has no need to have any importance with the second film. I was even willing to forget what happened going into the sequel. The problem is that it picks up exactly were the first film left off and is just a continuation of the first story.
The film opens up with the new Alien hybrid getting loose on the Predator's ship. For some unexplained reason there appears to be more then one now and the Predators can't seem to kill them. Then something happens that makes no sense what so ever. One of the small escape pods is released from the ship with the Predators and Aliens on it and is sent back to Earth. Why they would want to head back to the same planet they just escaped from is beyond me but they do anyways. The ship crashes into the forests near a small town that seems to go unnoticed by everyone except a father and son that are out hunting. They find the ship and both get attacked by the face hugger and both produce same mean looking little Aliens.
Meanwhile back in the town a twenty something kid has just come back home after being in jail from what I can gather but its hard to figure out because throughout the film there are side plots that are never flushed out, which makes them absolutely pointless and frustrating. The boy also has an older brother that seems to have had run ins with the law before too, yet he is friends with the Sherif that is in way over his head in trying to keep control of the town.
Soon more people start going missing in the woods which of course means there is the cliched search party which does nothing except serve as a way for the Aliens to increase their population. Meanwhile there is a throwaway scene near the beginning which appears to take place on the Predators' home world. It is easily the best thing in the film and I was hoping they would expand on it later in the film since getting a back story on either the Predators or Aliens and where they come from would have been very interesting but sadly the scene is probably no more then thirty seconds and that all we get. The only thing that the scene does do is establish that a new Predator has decided to head to earth and destroy the Aliens. I personally thought this was an awful choice. Having just one Predator in the film seemed pretty pointless. I would have loved to see a whole group of them come down and try and kick ass. Instead all we get is one Predator and a bunch of Aliens, plus one Alien/Predator hybrid that pretty much owns the Predator the entire film.
Now out of everything I mentioned there is one thing missing....yeah you guessed it the absolutely useless US army also has some screen time but its pretty short and they really don't do much of anything till the end which I'll get too.
The biggest problem I had with the movie was this is the first out of all the films in either franchise that has devolved into the stupid "teens in peril" plot which just gave the film a cheap 90's slasher feel to it, which is something I hate. Now I know some people will say stuff like "what do you expect from an AVP movie?" but thats just a poor excuse for bad writing. Just because you need victims for the Aliens and Predators to graphically kill doesn't mean you have to make them one dimensional annoying characters. For the most part they've never done it in any of the previous films yet thats all the had in this one.
Every cliched teen victim is in this film and even the awful "loner kid that gets in trouble with the law that loves the popular girl that has a jock boyfriend that beats him up" story line is in the film which is inexcusable. Not to mention that the ending was not only pointless and resolved nothing but was a complete rip-off of "Return of the Living Dead".
The most important thing for this film though was the gore. One of my many problems with the first film was the choice to go with a PG-13 rating or a 14A rating here in Canada. That of course was ridiculous when you consider that every other film in both franchises were strongly restricted movies. The good news in this one was that they certainly went out and made sure they got the R-Rating but the bad news is that even with todays' technology they failed to really show anything new. If you've watched the other films before then you've seen almost all of the deaths and gore done before and besides the blown off heads its been done better on lower budgets with way less resources then what this production crew had.
That being said I wouldn't say the film was a complete waste of time simply because of the Alien and Predator action which is never boring. Its just a shame that the actors script and directing around them couldn't have been better.
