Hatchet (Unrated) Review

"Hatchet" is an overrated slasher flick. A throwback to American 80's horror flicks, it has received rave reviews by horror critics, but don't believe them. No, "Hatchet" isn't crap like "See No Evil", but it's no better than the cheesy gorefests that inspired it. The character of Victor Crawley was being named by plenty as a new horror icon. Don't believe that either. He's just a giant "Elephant Man" with a penchant for ripping off limbs and has the personality of a tree. A real disappointment.
The acting in "Hatchet" is intentionally bad and so is the dialogue. An homage, no doubt, to "Old School American Horror" as the ads say. Even the score is campy and so those hoping for a scary atmosophere will be let down. All there is to really look forward to when watching "Hatchet" is the special makeup effects which there are plenty of. The gore is top-notch, but when a movie's only highlight is blood, there isn't much to recommend it.
There are some boobs for those who love that sort of thing. And, again, the kill scenes are fantastic. But, the movie isn't scary. Watching the ads, I was hoping it would be. Instead, what I viewed was a film that should've been direct-to-video material. I have no idea how Anchor Bay (or why) they released it in limited theaters. The movie (which is part comedy) didn't deserve it. 2 stars out of four (or C minus).
