Zodiac Review

Despite the fact that this movie doesn't exactly fall under the category of "horror", it is still a fairly unsetteling and creepy crime thriller.
I won't go into huge plot details, but mainly the film follows the ordeal of the Zodiac murders in the California area in the mid 1970's. It begins with his "first" murder (he claims he had killed before) and then progresses as he send letters to major newspapers, asking them to post his coded messages on the covers,so that people can decipher them. These letters supposedly reveal things about the killer. And as time goes on, the murders and letter continue. This whole ordeal goes on for about ten years.
Now, the movie hardly deals with the murders themselves, but more of the investigation of them. The main character is Robert Graysmith who is a cartoonist for one of the papers recieving letters, and he begins an intricate and personal investigation of the killer. Not necessarily alongside him are the policemen and reporters who themselves are investigating, but to no avail.
The movie is an amazing character study in showing what an obsession can do to a person as they slowly let it consume their lives. And at many times the movie is very creepy and suspenseful. The acting is terrific and the great cast definately carries the film (Gyllenhal, Downey Jr.). And in the three hours it lasts there is not a single dull moment.
I personally enjoyed this more than the two "big" flicks this year, No Country for Old Men & There will be Blood, but of course because it came out so early in the year, it got NO recognition from the academy and that was extremely dissapointing.
Despite this it is an awesome film, and you should really give it a watch.
