So I was going through my movie list to get things in order and realized I have never reviewed several of my favorites. I actually reviewed Beyond Re-Animator but never the original. What's up with that, I asked myself. When I first saw this one in the theater, it scared the crap out of me. So this review was born. Come along with me and walk the hallowed halls of Miskatonic Medical School.
Re-Animator is one of those films that every horror fan should see. It's a pre-requisite, if you will. Jeffrey Combs is in all his comedic horror glory as Dr. Herbert West. He has been working on a serum to bring the dead back to life. Stopping death: Every doctor's dream and every undertakers nightmare. It does work, but there is one tiny little problem. When the dead come back, they are PISSED! And kind of zombified and a little nuts.
Now this is not the traditional eat-em-up zombie film, this is more a lesson in what not to do with Mother Nature. Even though West means well, his serum is stolen by someone who is a little more sinister. He is out for fame and glory. And we all know where that attitude will get you. Sometimes you can lose your head. ;)
There are a lot of reasons that this film has obtained cult status. Apart from being fun and original, it is gory and just flat out cool. Combs is at the top of his game here. He delivers a dark and witty performance that will stock you up in memorable lines for quite a while. And who doesn't want to see funny old men bouncing around rubber rooms, psychotic cats, crazy clothesless cadavers, or heads impaled on memo spikes? Fun times to be had by all.
Also pay special attention to the phenomenal score. Sound familiar? Hitchcock fans will recognize the underlying notes of the famous Psycho music. This was a direct and loving homage laid down by the composer. And very fitting I might add.
