Feast Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

Holy crap I haven't had this much fun since Slither. John Gulager's Feast is sort of a cross between a Guy Ritchie action film, Night of the Living Dead and big bloody mess. If you enjoy clever writing, a fun cast and kickass sequences of blood splattering all over, then you are in for a treat. This baby goes from zero to bloody in 14 minutes and never lets you up for air.

The plot breaks down like this: we are in a tavern in the middle of nowhere getting to know a crew of really interesting characters when the doors swing open to reveal a would-be hero claiming that something really bad is coming and he is going to save the day. Bad isn't exactly the right word for it. Upon seeing what he is referring to the only words that come to mind all have four letters and there is a string of them. It seems that the hero and his wife have inadvertently pissed off an entire family of God-knows-what and they are mean.

The rest of the film consists of our captives attempting to either keep them at bay or fight for their lives. And while I'm on the subject, let's discuss the crew. We have a bar owner, a bartender, a couple of waitresses, an old woman, a paraplegic and his brother, an out-of-towner, a few drunks, our hero and his wife and a kid. I think I got them all. But if I missed anyone it's no wonder. This film is so action packed that sometimes it's hard to keep a head count..hehe.

The cast is cool too. We have a personal favorite of my own in Clu Gulager (also father of the director), Balthazar Getty, Jason Mewes, Henry Rollins (!), and Duane Whitaker to name a few. What a fun bunch!

I'll stand up and cheer for writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. The dialog is funny and engaging. Never before have I heard Donkey Kong referenced as a plan for escape.

Let's see now. What's bad about it? Not a damn thing. I really have no complaints. It's messy where it ought to be, funny where it needs to be and nothing short of a blast from beginning to end. I recommend the viewing of this film while wearing something water resistant. At times you will feel as if the goo is gonna break right out of the screen.
