House of the Dead Review

3 out of 10 Skulls

My view of this 'film' can be summed up in one word: Ppbbth! (or however you spell a raspberry). Here's the lowdown. A group of college kids with too much money and no sense head to a deserted island for a rave.

This was based on the video game of the same name. If you are ever confused about that, the filmmakers thoughtfully interject clips from the actual game for no apparent reason. All it did for me was make me wish I was playing the game instead of watching the crap. So, they get there and one after another, the annoying characters get bumped off but I certainly didn't care. I even caught myself thinking a few scenes were going to be scary. But then I woke up and remembered what I was watching and the scary part was that it wasn't over yet. Just when you think that they are all going to die and it will end, they are saved (sort of) by a tenacious cop and a gun-running boat captain.

The plot was pretty much nonexistent so they attempted to cover this with clever camera techniques. But I have news for Uwe. ONE slow-mo camera spin can be charmingly cheesy but using this on EVERY character only drives home the fact that there is nothing else to say. If you haven't been exposed to this horror, please don't force yourself. At best, House of the Dead is a misdirected action flick with zombies thrown in (they tell you numerous times in case you couldn't tell). At worst, it is what it is.
