Skinwalkers Review

4 out of 10 Skulls

Remember the Skinwalkers promos that made it look like a really cool vampire movie, ala 30 Days of Night?  A few early screenings by horror-movies.ca members revealed the  sad truth.  Everyone hated it.  So I didn’t expect much of my first viewing of this poorly reviewed film.  But I liked it.  Kind of.  Well, no, not really.  But I didn’t hate it.

An evil faction of werewolves wants to kill at will and be free to wolf out.  They are at war with werewolves that strap themselves up to avoid hurting anyone when the curse takes over their bodies.  The best part about the movie is Timothy (Matthew Knight), the boy who being protected by family and friends as the One to End the Werewolf War.  Matthew’s acting was great, which is fortunate because the storyline depended on his performance.  I was also happy with the plot, which is ironic because usually a good plot is the base of a good movie, but not so much here.

So much for the positives.  This movie relied way too much on gun fighting.  I don’t want to see any kind of monsters shooting at each other.  Ever.  Werewolves are supposed to claw and bite and throw each other around.  Disappointing.

Another major disappointment was Rhona Mitra’s Rachel, the mother of Timothy.  If you have seen Doomsday, you value her as an ass-kicking beauty.  In Skinwalkers, she was the anti-ass-kicker.  I kept waiting for her to bust out of her shell of wimpiness and start taking out werewolves, but it never happened.  She wasn’t even eye candy, but that’s okay because Natassia Malthe did that job as Sonja.

Bottom line.  Thursday night.  You’re on the couch and don’t feel like getting up to put in a DVD.  The television guide gives you few options:  Survivor, This Old House, or Skinwalkers.  Watch Skinwalkers.  Or Survivor, if you are a fan.
