10 out of 10 Skulls

Here we go, kids. I LOVE this film. I first heard about Dog Soldiers in a magazine months before it was released and I waited with dripping jaws to see this film that got such rave reviews. As soon as it was available, I snatched it up. And I was not disappointed. Dog Soldiers quickly became one of my new favorite films. Let me tell you why.

The film follows a group of soldiers on maneuvers in the Scottish Highlands. There have been tales of missing hikers and campers throughout the area. The soldiers soon find out why when they are confronted by a pack of werewolves and must take shelter in an old farmhouse. Here they explore all of the old myths and add their own twists. The story is taut, fast-paced, exciting, and you actually give a damn about the characters. I really get upset when the guys get killed (even after watching it as often as I have).

This film is stylishly written and peppered with just the right amount of humor and gore. There are no crazy plot points. The idea is up front and in your face. It is a classic werewolf film, no bones about it. There is nothing bad that I can say about this film and you know that is pretty difficult for me. If you are a fan of Pre-CGI werewolves, see it. If you are a fan of gritty, just plain good filmmaking, see it. If you are breathing, see it. This film will likely sweep the Mavens this year. ;
