The Howling (1981) Review
Written by: BlackTequilaKiss
Despite this movie being older than I am, it still to this day remains one of my favourite Werewolf movies around. Sharp, sassy and genuinely terrifying.
PLOT-- After a strange and traumatising incident with a serial killer turned stalker, Karen White decides to go to a retreat to relax and ease herself back to normality. However things don't go to plan. And she starts to realise that once again her life might be in danger. What she doesn't know is she's among a clan of Werewolves until it is too late.
No.1 Reason I Love this Film: The cast are brilliant, Dee Wallace as broken woman, Karen White is beautiful and she plays her role well, given that this was released at the pinnacle of her career it's hard not to love the performance she exudes. Robert Picardo as the guy who stalks and terrifies her does his job with absolute aplomb, the other actors do a fantastic job with what's offered to them. Without this incredible cast, I don't think the movie would have the effect it has had,
No.2 Reason I Love this Film: The storyline is wonderful given that it is a simple story about a well known myth. The little twists that incorporate the movie are welcome additions and it moves along at a tidy pace while at the same time keeping your mind occupied.
No.3 Reason I Love this Film: Director Joe Dante (also director of Gremlins) has an amazing knack of know what's working within both this and the Gremlins films. He influences the dark, intense vibe against peaceful; serene surroundings. Lighting in his hands works to the edge of beauty and likewise his direction of the character's is in beautiful synchronisation. Back in his days Dante had a magic that was dazzling even in the dimmest of lights.
FINAL Thought // In a nutshell this is an absolute of a joy to watch. From the opening where Karen lives in mortal danger to the finale that brings tears to dry eyes, it never lets go of the horror element.
Stunningly done and quite dark in taste it epitomises everything that a Werewolf movie should be. Wonderful, just simply wonderful. It has to be seen to be believed!!
