The Descent (2005) Review
Written by: Gardenofstone10
I rented this movie when it first came out, and turned it off. I bought this movie, then sold it without watching it. Then I bought it again and am now watching it all the way through for the second time. It did have to grow on me and now I love the movie
The opening scene of this movie is tragic as our main character loses her hubby and daughter in a tragic car accident. That accident sets the tone of the movie as the girls try to have fun but our main one just can't stop thinking about her little girl she lost. Our film starts out in the United Kingdom then moves, somehow, to North Carolina.
As our girls are hiking through the woods to their cave, this movie is plagued with BEAUTIFUL scenary. When they enter the cave, this is the part of the movie where I feel suffocated because I am TERRIBLY clausterphobic and this movie doesn't shy away from the panicking details. To me, that's enough to consider this a horror movie. Of course, more fun is ahead!!!!
I don't think a movie exists where someone goes into a cave and doesn't break their leg, with bone showing, beautiful sight. Then, Gollum shows up and all shit hits the fan at this point. It's not really Gollum, I think it's called a crawler, but cave creatures attack these lovely women and get to a couple of them and make a delicious lunch out of it.
As the movie ends, we are plagued with hallucinations of hope and random children with birthday cake. That's the kind of ending I like...not a happy one.
All in all, this movie delivers. It's scary when it needs to be, it's clausterphobic when it needs to be, and it's false hope right where it should be. I am very proud to have this as a part of my collection and eagerly anticipate the sequel that will be coming later this year. Peace
