Against the Dark (2009) Review

3 out of 10 Skulls

Ok I admit it I watched it. Disappointed Yes. I mean what was I expecting. More cash, a bigger set and that little something that helps make a movie good if not great. I sort of hovered between giving this a 3 or a 4 as the mutants where quite effective and the gore was, well, gorey.

This is not a vampire movie but more along the lines of 28 days. They are mutants infected by a virus and they  are more like ghouls than vampires. We have 2 sets of people in a deserted hospital wandering the corridors after hiding out from those infected outside. Both sets are looking for various things like drugs for healing purposes and food and to save their own lives. Oh actually one guy is into recreational drugs but what the hell was he thinking taking them in their situation.  These two sets of people meet up and head for the exit but it seems that this hospital is a rabbit warren so going directly downstairs and out is out of the question. In this hospital they come across and kill various mutants that are ravenous for flesh and blood. Some of these people are going to die and some are going to turn (it was in the script) They get separated and come together spasmodically and their fight to live continues.

We also have army dudes on the outskirts of town getting ready to 'sanitize" (in other words blow the town up!) And within this we have the Hunters with Seagal as the leader Tao (now that is getting arrogant-the name I mean) so the Hunters hunt by slicing and dicing the infected and they have little time for conversation. In fact the two female hunters say nothing (unless I blinked and missed it) even when one is dragged to her death.

So Seagal catches up with the individual survivors and saves some of them and although you should know better and this is a bit of a spoiler-walks into the sunrise in the end. Sorry to those hoping that he would be dead.
