Splinter (2008) Review
Written by: Gardenofstone10
Splinter is one of my many blind buys so far this year. Thanks to this site, I have added so many great horror movies to my collection based off of the reviews and conversations we all have with great horror movies. This is one of them.
I am terrible with names so I'll make the actual movie plot short and nameless. A newly married couple goes camping and forgets something so has to go and drive to a motel or hotel. Along the way, a fugitive on the run and his girlfriend carjack them and take them hostage. When they stop at a gas station for coolant and gas, they find a terrible surprise. A parasite that produces splinters and rapid cellular regeneration and is heat seeking, basically puts all 4 of our friends hostage at the gas station.
In a surviving effort, our newlyweds make it through a very suspenseful night at the middle of nowhere gas station.
When I first heard of this movie, I thought it was just a lot of hype that wouldn't be lived up to. Then I started hearing more and more people saying how good it was. Then EVERYONE I can think of said nothing but good things about this movie. So, like I mentioned at the beginning of the review, this movie was a blind buy for me. After viewing it, I couldn't be happier that I own this movie.
There is a lot of rewatch value in this movie. I will probably watch it 2-3 more times this year (random people coming over).
What also strikes me is that this movie is borderline on being original. It's almost a zombie movie, almost a monster movie...it's that thin line right between the two. It has suspense, fantastic gore, sweet monsters and above all, ABOVE ALL, believable characters. The newlyweds, we felt the love between them especially in the dangerous situations and at the end. The convict and his girlfriend, you really felt their absolute love for each other despite being criminals. It's surprisingly good and I would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone I talk to. Put this one as candidate of the year for Best Horror Movie. At least top 10. Peace.
