Martyrs Review

9 out of 10 Skulls

Those of you who know me will know I hate violence for the sake of violence in movies. I also tend to steer away from the very graphic horror films since I feel its exploitive and rarely serves  a purpose in our genre. So you should understand when I say two things... #1 this movie is easily one of the Top 5 most graphic and violent films I have ever seen and its also equally one of the most intriguing movies I have ever seen. Admittedly the material is so disturbing its hard to call the movie a good film but it is just that. Martyrs is beyond disturbing and is also one of the most unique and interesting horror films I have ever seen. Once again our French filmmaker friends are redefining our genre and traumatizing us all in the same breath.

I am not going to reveal any of the story to you because you need to watch the film and let it unfold for you the way it did for me. I can tell you its violent, its grotesque and just when you think you have seen it all... your going to get plunged into the deep end. The level of violence in this film and more importantly sadistic violence is completely over the top. What makes this movie different and distinct however is how they use the violence while still maintaining the story and leading you down a very warped, a very disturbing but also very involved story. This is not HOSTEL. It is far more violent and grotesque then HOSTEL but its driven by the characters and the story and it really digs right down into your bones and you feel the story.. and the pain.

This is not your typical slasher film. Its not your typical film about a deranged killer. Its nothing like High Tension and its nothing like Frontieres. It is a better story and it is also a thousand times more violent and graphic. So graphic that at times I simply had to skip forward a few seconds to get past some of the more gruesome fare.

Martyrs is without question not for the faint of heart as it makes films like Silence of the Lambs and even High Tension seem like PG-13 kiddy fare. The film does however offer a very unique story, an outstanding performance by the complete cast and visual FX that should do a pretty good job at turning your stomach.

It manages to carry a story despite the insane level of violence when normally gore derails a movie or becomes the sole focus. Its shocking but not about shock value and without question its a great film that could not have been done any other way. Watch it... but be prepared..
