Dead Snow (2009) Review

6 out of 10 Skulls

This film of Norwegian origin was pretty fun in essence but it didn’t really turn out the way I expected it to having done a good bit of research on the film prior to my viewing.

The story involves a group of medical students who embark on a mountain getaway for Easter Weekend.  It’s the cabin in the middle of no where motif that I am going to assume we have all seen before…and of course what would any cabin in the middle of nowhere be without some sort of evil presence lurking in the surroundings.  In this case its Nazi Zombies and not Deadites.  This film really took its cue from the Evil Dead series which is fine, certain scenes you can see were taken right from The Evil Dead films specifically Evil Dead 2…watch when our medical students start to arm themselves in the shed next to the cabin…classic camera work!

Now so far as problems with the film there are a few for me at least…One, the soundtrack in the film is terrible.  The music doesn’t fit in most sequences and makes certain parts just silly that didn’t need to be.  I know this film is being tagged as a horror comedy but there really isn’t that much comedy in it unless you count the over the top gore which there is plenty of.  Two, I was disappointed that we really didn’t get any answers concerning the Nazi Zombies…it is left very ambiguous.

Other than those few points for the most part this is a fun film…I watched it by myself but it probably would have been better to watch with a bunch of friends over…it gets pretty ridiculous towards the end and would make for some great Mystery Science theater fodder!  All in all though, not a bad low budget horror film, the director shows potential.
