Candyman (1992) Review

How is it that I am a horror movie veteran and haven't seen this movie? 

Quick plot: Our movie follows the very, very lovely Virginia Madsen (sister of the awesome Michael Madsen) looking to do a report and possibly book on the urban legend of Candyman.  The urban legend being that if you stare into a mirror and say, "CANDYMAN, CANDYMAN, CANDYMAN, CANDYMAN, CANDYMAN" then turn off the light, Candyman will appear and kill you. 

There is something about her that the Candyman (the kickass Tony Todd) likes and wants her to become the next him.  A back and forth story, she is framed for murder and is basically a criminal on the run. 

The movie ends with, "HELEN, HELEN, HELEN, HELEN, HELEN" and she comes back to life and kills people.  Pretty friggin sweet, right?  RIGHT

Most people have played this game in some way or another.  When I was a kid and in elementary school in the early 90s, it was Bloody Mary to chant only 3 times, with the lights off, and when you turned the lights on, she would be there.  Scary fun.  That right there is why this movie idea worked and gets a 10 out of 10.  Everyone has done this and after seeing this movie, it would make it all the more fun to try it. 

The only part of the movie that I didn't get was outside of the housing project in the bathroom.  A little boy was.....well his penis was cut off supposedly by the Candyman.  That had no relevance to the story at all and was a little disturbing to cast a kid for that part.  Still good fun, though. 

This movie is a for sure classic and I will have to go out and buy it right away, you should too.  Peace.
