AVP - Alien Vs. Predator Review
Written by: TERRORWATCH
Two giants come together in this Vs movie titled Alien Vs Predator. Brought to us in 2004 and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson the movie shows the two go battle in a big way. During an archaeological expedition in Antarctica, a team of archaeologists and other scientists find themselves caught up in a battle between the two legends. Soon, the team realise that only one species can win. The movie's hype was massive, all around the world everyone knew this movie was coming and in the UK we knew about 1 year before it hit us. Sadly this movie was a let down from the start and the hype seemed to be something that we could of done without. Without a doubt you can tell the movie has had allot done to it, it wasn't a bunch of guys doing a piss poor job putting it together, it was Hollywood's best efforts.
The whole cast in the movie wasn't noticed much in the movie as the two giants took the stage. The movie was so loud and full of alien that i didn't even notice many actors there. The invisible cast were Sanaa Lathan, Lance Henriksen, Raoul Bova, Ewen Bremner, Colin Salmon. The winner for best acting and altogether best performances were the guys the in the suits dressed as the monsters. Well the best human actors without a big latex suit on was the main actor Sanaa Lathan who played Lance Henriksen, a head strong control freak that has to take a step back and let the baddies set the show. For me she has to be the best performer because thats the only actor you see on screen throughout the movie.
I wont say shes a excellent actor because shes on screen most of the movie but she was OK. Her screams and shaking were cool and her ability to look like a strong black female looked great next to the menacing Predator. The problem with the actors and characters in the movie was that for the first 30 min we get to see and know each character like we expect to see them allot. Well in the what i call middle of the movie they all get picked off just a little too quick and all that getting to know the character was a complete waste of time because they were dead within 2 minuets. So for this movie its a no go area for the acting part you minds well put it in a case and stuff it up someones ass.
Aliens and predator, the name says it all, we are going to see some bone crushing s.e and gore. Well in this movie we are not disappointed for sure, the s.e and makeup really was great and for once the CGI was just right were it was needed and not a let down what so ever. Firstly the Alien and Predator looks really real and detailed, they looked so scary and monstrous it made you feel on edge just looking at them. Allot of slobber and grease, dark skin and metal platting made them look so great and they fitted in great with the movie. The CGI was great, only used for a few shots when the stunt men in suits couldn't do the job, even so the CGI was great and barely noticeable. There was allot of death scenes but we didn't see to much blood it was more slobber and great green predator blood. The movie didn't lack anything in this department even the alien suckers look great when they jumped and putting in slow mo shots of it in action really made it look great and creepy. Detailing in the movie was also fabulous, allot of really detailed shots of the Alien and allot of hatching eggs made it work totally. Overall the movie did really deliver here and i was not disappointed one bit.
The movie had not much of a soundtrack of all and if it did i didn't notice it what so ever. However this was not a let down due to the great sound effects that were put together in this movie. So much creaking and splitting noises were there which enhanced every scene by 100%. The freaky noises that came out of the monsters mouths rocked, we are used to seeing the creatures in the early 90's were the effects and movie making were some what not as advanced. Now you get to hear every terrifying thing that comes out of them and let me tell you its one fucking scary thing to hear. The movie also looks great, mostly set underground in a Aztec pyramid it really combines sort of spacey SI FI with old jungle love. Its great as the pyramid works like a maze and really did take me back to the 1990's movie Cube. The movie did look the part and so did the other scenes like frozen ocean with the ship to the snowy mountains.
Overall the movie for the good parts did impress me but the overall feel of the movie sucked. I thought the movie had no balance or sense of direction, i mean i was watching the movie thinking this is the middle part were the action goes on and then being let down by the short climax that happened 2 min later. There was no sort of order in the which the movie was running Although scenes and fighting scenes were great the real death scenes were far and few leaving me aching for a bit of on screen deaths. Check this movie out though its still a pretty fun movie to watch and for those SI FI and Aliens fans you will enjoy watching it in action. Who wins did you say? Well thats for you to find out....
