Outlander (2008) Review

This film was a fun little monster movie…get some pop corn and enjoy! A spaceship crashes to earth in the opening sequences…the year on earth is currently 709 A.D. the iron age and the time of the Vikings. Our hero Kainan emerges from his wrecked ship and quickly learns his whereabouts and programs the current language into his mind. He quickly arms himself with a wicked weapon and heads off as if tracking something. I won’t get too much in to plot detail but lets just say the film moves forward at a decent pace.
Basically Kainan comes from another planet and is human himself…it is hinted that earth is an “abandoned seed colony” suggesting that Kainan and his people tried to kick start civilization on our world. Kainan’s crashed ship had a very deadly passenger aboard known by his people as a Moorwen, which escaped the crashed ship as well and quickly stakes out a territory amongst two local rival Viking tribes. Upon teaming up with one of the Viking tribes Kainan explains that he is hunting a dragon, a term the Vikings can understand.
It’s a fun movie…don’t expect too much and you will probably enjoy yourself. The monster was cool and fairly vicious in its means of dispatching prey and I liked the overall setting of the piece. I’m a sucker for period pieces. The film has a lot of Beowulf motifs in it…and I don’t mean the film Robert Zemeckis did but the poem itself. It’s really just another version of the story.
So if you like your history mixed with a little horror and sci-fi check this film out. My only real complaint is that the CGI at times was a bit weak but not terrible overall. Oh, that and the scene where the Vikings play a stupid drinking game that involves shields…seemed unnecessary to me.
