Seed (2007) Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More Seed (2007) Review
4 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: BlackTequilaKiss

Uwe Boll. A name that strikes fear into the heart of any Horror fan. I watched this with hope that maybe his luck had changed around, I finished realising I might has well have not bothered. I am disappointed but really what was I expecting from this man? Still it seems a shame as this movie had such great promise.

Plotline: Sam Seed, a mass murderer is scheduled for execution. After three attempts to electrocute him, he remains alive. All of the men present declare him dead even though it is not the case. He is then bound and buried alive. However Seed manages to bite and claw his way to the surface. Now enraged he is intent on vengeance against those who attempted to get rid of him.

It started off pretty well. Cops exploring the house of Seed and us getting a glimpse into a macabre but ultimately brilliant mind. The traps and deaths were inventive and from that point on I thought I was in for a decent movie.

But after the initial thrill, things very quickly began to wear thin. For this reason alone I am glad it aired on Zone Horror first, I've no doubt that if I had rented this I would have regretted the decision.

Let's start with the good points of this film-
The look of the killer was damn decent. It was a merge almost of the Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre masks. Fact that the killer hid behind a mask was probably a plus for this movie as you always found yourself wondering what he looked like.

Deaths were pretty decent. Some were more inventive than others. i.e. under the bed scene, brilliant! but done in veins seen in a lot of horror movies lately. This was probably the best feature of the entire movie.

And the ending which actually did give me chills.

Now the bad-
Lightening was far too dark for the movie. I understand they were trying to implement suspense but it was hard to concentrate on some of the deaths when it was so dark I could barely see the little gems. Ultimately disappointing.

Characterisation? They def. tried hard to get us to understand and appeal to the characters within the film but it all seems too simple. Therefore sympathy for them was hard to gain. In which case the deaths seemed more enjoyable than ought to have been. The only point in the film I changed my view on a character was the end scene and by then it felt too late into the story.

What of the plot? It was ok. It wasn't a too tired formula but what made it lose respect was the time they took trying to establish a back story and how long it took until the execution of Seed. Bottom line was the story was too long to get off ground and by that point I was losing patience.

Gore was the biggest element and probably the main focus of the film and of what I saw it was very good. But why they felt the need to do some of the deaths in almost pitch black was beyond me. I could not see the deaths all too clearly and I felt rather cheated, but what I did see looked pretty well done so respect. Soundtrack was ok. Ominous, but consistent it was one of the better motions of the movie.

The camera work was another sore point. I never could understand the constant moving at a fast pace, the bumps, it all seemed to be trying to do a Blair / Cloverfield routine that just did nothing for this. Smoother, more even motions would have been a much better addition as opposed to what they ended up doing.

Cinematography? Kind of between good and mediocre. It didn't focus on this element very much at all and I felt like I was waiting for those moments of beauty that can take a dire movie and give it some ambience. But it never really came into focus which was a shame.

I wanted to love this movies. Reviews for it looked promising, I was hearing from people who usually avoided Boll's movies that it was actually worth checking out. Everything seemed right then I watched it and found myself thinking I had missed something.

Don't get me wrong, this had potential. The story was easy enough to understand, the main killer was pretty ruthless and it had markings that could have made it a decent throwback to add a actual good movie to Boll's CV but it seemed to be trying too hard. Worse still he seemed to be trying to use movies like Hostel to get himself noticed and it all seemed too familiar.

So why did I give this a 4 and not a zero? Because amid the gloom there was one thing in the movie that grabbed my attention. The finale.

There's no denying that horror movies of late have been copping out with endings that either make no sense or do but just do not get our attention rising, this did what they couldn't. It took me out of a comfort place and made me sit up and take notice. It is both disturbing and quite a way to end a movie. No happiness just a sense of fear whilst the goose bumps go cascading up your back. Quite a damn way to end a movie and for that I respect Uwe Boll, respect for that at least.

That is why I gave it 4 and not a zero. But really it is not enough for me to even come close to recommending this movie. It requires a lot of attention and you may feel like it was wasted once the film is finished. I feel saddened but I really ought to have expected it.

Not a movie I liked and certainly an acquired taste. Disappointing to say the least, that's all I can say. Bloody hugs, BTK.
