Baby Blues (2007) Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More Baby Blues Review
5 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: JoeTerror

The film centers around a family of six in the south and is “based on true events”. Yea, I know, been there done that. Well, once in a great while this does happen and a mother goes completely off her rocker and kills her kids ala postpartum depression, and this is the basis of the film.

It all begins after dear old dad returns home one day, he’s a trucker and seems to care enough for his family, but has to hit the road once again. He must be on the road quite a bit because it severely takes its toll on mum and she soon starts to unravel. That evening after dad leaves mom finally snaps and begins throwing the dinner plates and heads upstairs to give the baby a bath. Meanwhile Jimmy, the eldest of the kids, takes charge and begins cleaning things up while trying to calm his siblings. Something doesn’t seem right to Jimmy, and  from his earlier encounters with mom during the day, her bouts of sobbing and praying, and just acting a bit off, he goes upstairs to check on her. Well, things have gone from bad to worse and the baby is blue! Jimmy knocks mom out cold and thus the stalk and slash fun begins. A few people mentioned they thought the one liners she spews were hokey or lame, but they’re done in the same tone, and although they seemed a bit funny, she was sinister at the same time and it came across real enough for me. Think Jack Nicholson in the “Shining”.

In any event, there’s some great camera work, some good cat and mouse thrills, and for the most part an enjoyable chiller. The acting was way better then most indies as well as the production values. My only slight qualm with the film is that almost all of the gore is not shown and left to the imagination. Granted that's not a huge problem but I would've enjoyed it just a bit more had they pushed the envelope a bit more. It may boil down to just another stalker film but having kids as the recipients and to think this could happen, and/or does, it ends up being a bit disturbing. Kudos to directors Jacobson and Kaleka for a nice twist on the genre and here's looking to Blues 2. LOL!
