Midnight Movie (2008) Review
Written by: BlackTequilaKiss
Now this a movie I liked. It was not wholly new but it gave us a plot not seen previously in horror films. It created characters I actually cared about and the killer had little remorse. It starts off slow but as the movie builds so does the suspense.
I had heard a lot of this movie. Some saying it was ok, nothing special and some saying it was a fantastic little movie. I'm with the latter. Yes some of the moments are easy to decipher but as an whole it is hugely entertaining and gives some nicely added chills.
The Film
A vary of people sit down to a midnight viewing of an early 1970's horror film. As the movie progresses they realise something is very wrong and before long the killer in the film comes out of the film, killing anyone in his path. How do you stop someone who is in essence unstoppable.
I like that the idea surrounding the movie is not one that is seen in many a horror movie so it seemed to take on a more unique stance.
The killer is easy to hate because you are never given adequate reason to love him, this in turn allows you to actually gain sympathy for some of the people being hunted down. There is equally as aesthetic quality to how the killer goes about catching them and taking them down, the implore into the movie allows you really to see both sides of the coin.
I won't state every actor but one who deserves a special mention is,
Rebekah Brandes as Bridget. You immediately look at the girl and think she is not that smart nor unique and in the beginning she plays the typical teenager well. But when things turn and she can no longer pull the bubblegum routine, she quickly shows her mettle and the reason why they choose her. She is a good actress who hides behind a persona but in truth she has a lot of intelligence to her which I respected.
Cinematography was ok. Take into your mind. It is a theatre, older than most, airing films that are not heard of all too well, so it as a quality that sinks in throughout the film. The grandeur of the theatre, the aged wear and tear all add extra layers to the film and where it leads.
One of the best aspects of this film was really the gore. It is not a constant flowing element but when it is the main function, oh how the blood flies. Severing of necks? Fantastic, rusty implement straight through body into another, pure excellence. It all looked pretty damn good and truthfully you do find yourself caught up in the excitement of it all.
This one is rather short, yes. But it is a good movie. It is no brains entertainment that keeps you planted firmly in the seat, eyes glued to the screen. The backlog of the story is intriguing and the ending? There is no happy finale let's say. It doesn't give you a kind, sweet ending but pulls you back into the centre of the drama.
For a fun, blood-soaked source of entertainment, this truly does a fantastic job and I loved it from the opening scene, setting up the entire of the story, to the pulsating ending this grips you hard and never lets go. Watch it, you owe yourself time to seek this movie out, you won't regret it.
Pure mayhem, you'll love it!
Mwah!
BTK.
