Dawn of the Dead Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

Oh seeing this movie was joy and in the summer of 2003 I finally found that out for the first time in my life. Dawn of the dead was brought to us in the old days of 1978 by a horror hailed king, George A.Romero. This movie was a part of the famous zombie trilogy known to us, this was to become the middle movie. The movies in the Trilogy were Night, Dawn and then the best in the 3, Day. These were to become the most excellent and famous zombie flicks of all time. The movie shows us a couple of guys and one girl try ans escape the zombies and end up meeting up. Soon they find theme selfs barricaded in a shopping mall for weeks trying to find ways of escaping before the zombies get in. This movie must be one of the popular horrors out today and its defiantly a cult classic. The movie was remade in 2004 by Zack Snyder, not as great as this one but a very good movie, this shows this movies sex appeal.

Calling the movie a great acting movie would be wrong and I'm safe to say that many reviewers think this too. The movie had bog standard acting and for allot of it seemed very poor indeed. The guys in it seemed not too bothered about the killing zombies in it and the whole suspense was lost due to their under acting. The cast included David Emge, Ken Foree, Scott H. Reiniger, Gaylen Ross and David Crawford. For me out of all the main actors it was Ken Foree that really looked cool. His acting was standard like the rest of  the cast its just that he had something about him that really rocked. He looked super quick and very in control of everything and it wasn't the first time that George Romero used a black guy as the leading man. The zombies looked very cool also, slowly making there way around the mall, they were very slow but did walk like a really cool bunch of zombies. Nit picking aside and looking for good points, there ain't none, the movies acting was something they needed to improve on.

The zombies march looked like a big group of Smurfs having a party. Oh boy the zombies in the movie looked very awful. They all had blue faces and oozed bright red/orange blood. They didn't look at all scary as they looked all the same. They did learn there lesson though after 7 years they brought us Day and all the zombies and there own personalities and faces. These zombies just looked bog standard and although with a low budget i think it could of been done better just in the right way.

The mall was standard looking and not creepy at all but when filled with zombies it just looked the part. A slight amount of blood and gore in the movie and a few head shots did the trick. One great head shot was at a black man in the first 10 min, his head exploded and it looked very Dead Alive cool. Another great scene is where the black man actually bit into his partners neck, you could see the blood spurting out and the chunks of flesh being ripped apart, very cool also. For  some parts the s.e really came into its own and we got to see some great on screen killings and head shots. But for the other part it was boring and lifeless making the movie nothing more than a channel 5 movie.

Now the soundtrack in the movie has to be one of my all time faves and i really enjoy the music. Its very corny but also it sounds like it would have nothing to do with a zombie movie like it does. Its packed with hard loud sounds and loads of tunes make it really cool and fruity which i do like. The sound effects also were cool and i really like the whole cheesy sound effects for the guns when they fired. The thing is about this movie when you think about the good and bad parts is that the bad parts weigh so much more than the good ones. This means that the movie shouldn't be anything more than a 4 out 10 but theres something else. The movie has this atmosphere you cant describe and it makes you want to see the movie over and over again. Its a really weird atmosphere that makes its viewers fall in love with it. I don't know whether its the fact that this is the pinnacle of horror or what but it just has that lovable quality most movies don't have.

Overall the story keeps you sitting in your seats till the very end, its packed with some great all time great scenes and does really entertain when on the best parts. Every needs to see this movie as its a must see and must be viewed by all. Some parts are very boring and for the small parts are great, but overall it has that feeling making people gather to see the movie. This movie is the great sleep over movies you must watch and you would be kicking yourself if you turn it down.
