Homecoming Review
Written by: Meh I had a chance to checkout an early screener of Homecoming last weekend and now is the first time I have had to review it. The film stars Mischa Barton formerly of the OC, Jessica Stroup and Matt Long. The film is getting a limited theatrical release this summer and despite the fact it stars a typical cast of young attractive 20 somethings I have to say I enjoyed the movie. When a former small-town golden boy and his new college girlfriend visit his hometown during Christmas break, his high school sweetheart becomes insanely obsessed with getting him back. Even if it means murder … A college-aged take on “Misery” for the new generation. The film reminds me of Misery in a big kind of way. The only difference here is you have the nutbag ex girlfriend played by Mischa Barton who kidnaps and then holds captive the new girlfriend of her Ex. The film definitely has some cliche moments but as a whole it does offer some interesting characters and some entertaining moments. Admittedly this horror movie is by no means scary but it is definitely at times creepy. Mischa Barton was cast in my eyes for her 'name appeal' because at one time she was the 'it' girl with the young teens. Its unfortunate that her acting was the one draw back of the film. Where as Matthew Long, Jessica Stroup and the rest of the cast really delivered for me Mischa just fell short. I couldnt really tell if she was acting or just showed up to recite lines for the film. Despite this I did enjoy the film. The cast, the story and the overall premise was fun and as much as I thought this film would dissapoint it was kind of fun. Fans of action packed horror films or gorefests will want to pass but if you like films like Misery which this film can be compared to... you will like Homecoming. Overall a good but not great film that you may find entertaining. If you have ever had a psycho girlfriend you can probably relate.... I know as an ex bouncer I have had my share of whacko stalkers so this film definitely had me thinking twice about dating anyone who looks even remotely like Mischa. It is worth noting although I make comparisons to Misery this film is nowhere near as good... it just holds a small candle to it and is the closest film you can compare it to.
