Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning Review

6 out of 10 Skulls

This is, in my opinion, the Halloween 3 of the Friday series.  It's a good stand alone movie, but it's just robbing fans by using the Friday the 13th name. We start off with Tommy Jarvis in a mental institution full of, well, socially retarded people.  One of those guys is a pain in the ass and pisses off one of the more butch people, and gets BUTCHERED all to hell.

Roy, one of the paramedics, is the father of the kid who was murdered and gets pissed off at how remorseless the people are treating it. Using the M.O. of Jason Voorhees, Roy suits up and terrorizes and kills people at the halfway home. Friday movie from here on out with hot chick, black boy and Tommy surviving.  Tommy ends the movie with Jason's mask on, ushering a new possibility for part 6.

Now, this movie, say what you will, but it works.  Everyone (in Friday world) is afraid of Jason Voorhees.  They remember the terror he put into people and this movie plays that it's really Jason until the end.  It's smart.  However, it was ruined at how they treated the ending. I think the movie was a nice bridge to give Jason time to decompose and become the zombie like badass he is in part 6 and beyond.

This movie was just Re-released on a special edition DVD and pick it up if you see it.  The bonus features, like in the other ones (except part 3) are worth the purchase price alone.  Peace.
