Day of the Dead Review

9 out of 10 Skulls

In 1985 George R brought to us Day of the dead, finally for methe best in the dead series. The movie is taken from the trilogy Dead and this is the last of the 3. The movie shows a group of scientists and army soldiers living in a underground bunker surrounded by the walking dead. The whole structure crumbles when a new major is put in place of a recent one, this makes for a zombie eating frenzy. I first saw this movie when i was around 8 - 9 and didn't really think anything of it. It wasn't until i was around 11 that i saw it and it gave me a warm fuzzy feeling
for horror movies and zombies. Now this is one of my all time fave movies and always ever will be. Now i currently own 2 VHS, and 2 DVD versions of the movie, its totally is a mind blowing experience.

The acting in the movie is pretty standard, no real emotion just high action scenes and screams. The characters in the movie are in a wide range and allot on screen at one time makes you not get into a character. All the way through the movie i did notice that the actors did give off a great deal of suspense but not a scary one, i never really thought they looked scared. Like i stated before it was all action and screams, nothing special but nothing
really lost without it.

First of all even though the gore isn't to the standard of Dead Alive it certainly has some of the best scenes to make it be one of my all time fave gore movies. A few great scenes we notice are the death of a few army men, eg ripping them apart. One other great scene is in the lab and the zombie rolls over to spill its guts all over the floor. This movie is from what i know the first to have different kinds of zombies, in which i mean they all had a different look. This was really cool and made it more realistic, it wasn't just like the all blue faces of Dawn of the dead 1978. The make up artists did a great job and really made them look the part, thanks to the great help of Tom Slavini. Overall i cant fault the gore and special effects because at the time these s.e's were top a there peek, they couldn't have done a better job.

The soundtrack in the movie includes allot of thumping clam music, very spooky though. Nothing special to talk about, it has a few fruity Caribbean tracks going on due to the fact they needed to plan that damn tune every time the black guy spoke! LAME but funny. The movie looks great, underground and dark, the underground base looks like its only there for a real situation so it looks like its real and happening. Great sound effects and lighting were used to create the emptiness in there. What majorly sucked wasthe firring of the guns, sounded like some tin
cans being shot at with some spuds, very disappointing indeed!

Overall the movie is a good one and it is one of the great zombie movies made to date. Go check it out if your a hardcore horror fan, a granny, anyone will like this movie. Made with class, style and allot of blood its outclassed the 2 other movies in the dead trilogy.
