The Horsemen Review
Written by: Meh The Horsemen is easily defined as a good idea with a great cast very poorly executed. When I first saw the trailers and posters for this film I was very excited and unfortunately the film does not live up to the marketing materials. The film tries very hard and at times borders on genius while at other times borders on complete tears of boredom. It does not shock me at all that The Horsemen found its way to dvd without any attempt at a theatrical run. Dennis Quaid stars as a recently widowed detective, who discovers a link between himself and the suspects of a serial killer spree linked to the four horseman of the apocalypse. Unfortunately the whole story is so transparent that it does not take a master of horror to figure out where the story is going. At points the filmmakers try very hard to tie the story together making it to obvious and at other times it is tied together with plot points that are beyond ludicrous and made me shake my head. The film is well shot and features a well put together cast and at times is quite gruesome but unfortunately the film lacks any kind of intensity or real magic. Its just another run of the mill supernatural tale featuring religious elements and half baked story telling. The best comparison would be to call this a poor mans SEVEN but with a different take on the killer. I would have to say at best this movie is a rental but not a buy. I like serial killer flicks and I also love the religious ties but for me this movie tried to hard and delivered very little in the form of entertainment much less terror or suspense. Even Randy Quaid who normally does a fantastic job at entertaining me couldnt deliver much. Overall the film is as noted lackluster and the ending is a text book case of 'saw that coming' followed up by 'now what... lets just fade to black'.
