The Mutilator (1985) Movie Details: DVD, Theatre Date, News, Trailers & More The Mutilator Review
7 out of 10 Skulls
Written by: Suspiria_89

The Mutilator is a cult slasher that a lot of horror fans haven’t seen. Especially the younger ones. Probally because it has never gotten a official DVD release(still waiting on Code Red) Therefore it doesn’t get the amount of attention it deserves. It was released in 1985 and was directed by Buddy Cooper, it stars Matt Mitler and Ruth Martinez.

Plot: Ed, a likeable high school student, busily discusses vacation plans with his friends when he receives a message from his father asking that he close up the summer house at the beach. While his friends feel that it’s a perfect opportunity for a vacation, Ed is uneasy about the request, as his father has never quite forgiven him for the accidental shooting of his mother. Soon after the group arrives, they begin to die one by one in very gruesome way.

The Mutilator ranks number seven on my top ten favorite slashers of all time list. It has a lot of good things going for it. The first thing is the setting. A good bit of the movie takes place on the beach, which makes a great slasher movie setting(IMO) and there isn’t to many slasher movies that have a beach setting so it’s at least a little original. The next thing is the amazing gore. We have a fairly low body count but each kill is drawn out and is very graphic. We have awesome decapitations, people get sawed in half, legs get cut off, and we have a really creepy drowning scene and of course we have the infamous hook through the vagina scene. The movie is also fast paced, the score isn’t half bad, and it even has a little suspense. Especially during the pitch black hide and seek game.

Now it’s time to talk about the flaws, and The Mutilator has quite a few. The first is the acting. The acting in this movie is some of the worst I have ever seen. There are a few scenes in the movie in which the acting is so bad you just have to laugh. I have no idea why they just didn’t cut the scenes out of the movie. The next flaw is the lightning, which is absolutely terrible. Some scenes are so dark you can barely see what’s going on. And I have to mention the soundtrack which sounds like it should be in the t.v. show Full House, not a slasher flick.

If you’re a fan of 80’s horror and you don’t mind a little cheesiness, I highly recommend you find a copy of The Mutilator. Be sure to get the Unrated version, you might have to look a little harder but it’s worth it. The cut version is not as near as good and doesn’t have as much gore
