Evil Dead Review

8 out of 10 Skulls

In 1981 a movie that would go on to shock the world of cinema was brought to us in the form of a VSH tape called Evil Dead. Directed by Sam Raimi he created a cursed picture also remaining a splatter movie, one shock of a horror picture. With a budget of a $90.000 the movie was going to be a struggle getting much out of it but we did, guts, blood and severed heads.

The movie plot follows a group of kids going into the woods to stay in a log cabin for a break when they accidentally awake the evil spirit's in the woods and before they know if are surrounded by the un-dead and crazy possessed beings. The movies history also had a bumpy ride with Sam and his crew having to go to doctors and investors to make up the small budget they had. The for distribution purposes had to sleep in a few holes to get were the movie is today, a great classic.

As for acting goes on the movie its all standard acting and no names are of any mention here expect for Bruce Camball how would go on to do major Hollywood movies and being hailed as "Ash". The movies cast consisted of 5 girls and guys, just standard acting here as most of them were from local film schools so nothing major was going to be going on. Screaming and shouting overclouded the movie while they were still alive on screen.

The cast went through major harsh times to film the movie, extreme personality shifts to trees raping  women, the movie had the shock and depth it needed. However none of the cast really did not identify with their characters and as the cheese and obvious things happen, the weak guy at the end always comes on top. Still this movie was gory enough to contend with Dead Alive so acting isn't really a thing to be bitching about, its a fun comedy horror splatter.

To the true horror fan the weight of blood in this movie is nothing compared to Dead Alive and Bad Taste, Pieces and many more. But to everyone else its really said to be the most sick and gored up movie they have come across and believe you me allot of people have seen this. The special effects were really low budget and allot of the faces and stabbing's all looked like they were created with plasticine. All the animated movements were very basic and you can see they have stretched and re winded the tape to get the bad visuals they have on the movie.

However its fun gore and the blood in this movie was in every inch of film you watched. The poor Bruce Camball was put through his paces with blood and guts through at him in every scene and it went on like that for him in everyone Evil Dead movie after that. All the special effects and stunts performed in the woods were all very lame but thats because of the low budget factor however all the cast managed to overcome every problem with the basic of tools, from twigs to garden polls. Altogether the movies on screen work and for what you see in special effects is very poor indeed but you gotta give it to the lads, their budget was smaller than whats in a tramps pocket.

The movies background scores consisted of very heavy drums being played every time it shown on screen that the "evil" in the woods was coming or moving to the kids. There wasn't much going on just some bits of background work to create some atmosphere to the lame parts of the movie. The sound effects were cool and unreal like,  very basic and poor but seeing poor special effects and poor sound effects made the match and became pretty entertaining and groovy. I did like the heavy audio of the possessed zombies banging for the cellar though and i though doing that made the movie more shocking and made the evil in the house more menacing on film.

Altogether the movie is a cult classic and always will be a bench mark in horror. Sam Raimi's best works for me, not because its the best movie he made but just for the amount of work put in just to show off his talents. Sam would then go on to do good and bad movies, to slightly high budget Evil Dead 2 to the massive budget Hollywood blockbuster Spider man 1 & 2. Seriously great fun horror movie that ain't got all the glitz and glamour of a todays horror, defiantly watch this because its actually scary.
