Day of the Dead (original) Review

Day of the Dead is a classic zombie movie that sometimes gets over looked in the horror community. I hear people calling this one the worst in the Romero zombies and calling it dumb or too slow. Honestly the first time I watched it I didn't care much for it either, but after giving it thought and more appreciation I have come to love this movie almost as much as Dawn of the Dead!
I love this movie from start to finish, the whole feeling of the movie is great and the story and especially the gore is all good. The gore is some of Tom Savini's best work in the eighties, it looks really realistic and this movie has one of the most memorable ripped in half by zombies scene in a movie.
Day of the Dead is about a group of military people taking hold in an underground lab while doctors work on and research the undead that have taken over. They round up specimens and give them to the doctor who they all think is insane. Over time the soldiers want to get out of there and start getting mad. They feel staying in hiding and waiting to die is the wrong way to go. Then the scientists and the only female down there, along with the black pilot and the Mr Bean look alike, are siding with the doctors and there is tension growing between the two. THe main research doctor is making great progress with his studies but he is using the corpses of the dead soldiers to do this and if the soldiers find out, they won't react well. What will happen?
This movie has my favorite zombie in a zombie movie I've ever seen. His name's Bub and he is AWESOME! He thinks, shows emotion, he learns, and he doesn't attack people. This zombie shows that they can be trained not to be violent. This zombie shows the peace they can have and they can be treated as pets in a way, or to the soldiers they are pets doing tricks. They don't like that idea and the doctor stands up for the zombies and he treats them like children. He puts zombies in the dark for time out and he rewards them for doing things, this movie is very interesting. I love this movie and how the story and whats going on makes you wonder and think as well as be amazed.
The gore in this movie as I said is very very good and I think its arguably Savini's best to date. Day of the Dead is a great movie and is of course directed by George Romero. I would highly recommend checking this movie out, but don't sit there looking for a zombie gore fest, watch it for what it is. Enjoy this, I give Day of the Dead a nearly perfect 9/10!!!!
