10 out of 10 Skulls

I have seen a lot of horror movies in lifetime. If I had to estimate I would say that I’ve seen well over one thousand. And My Bloody Valentine is my all time favorite. I first saw the movie when I was twelve years old and I instantly fell in love with it. And then on January 13, 2009 a Uncut special edition DVD was released. I went to Best Buy and bought a copy and rushed home to watch it. After viewing the Uncut version I decided that My Bloody Valentine was my favorite horror movie. I was amazed at how much was cut out of the movie. I was surprised at how much better the movie was with additional footage added in.

Plot: Twenty Years after a Valentines day tragedy, a small town prepares for it’s annual valentines day dance. When a box of candy arrives containing an eerie warning and a blood soaked heart, the towns folk realize that this valentines day romance is as good as dead………..and so are they.

My Bloody Valentine is the Holy Grail of Slashers. If someone told me they wanted to see a perfect slasher movie, this is the one I would show them. Every part of the slasher movie formula is present. We have a good old fashioned revenge plot, a creepy disguised killer, gory and somewhat creative deaths and an amazing atmosphere. The death scenes in the cut version aren’t anything special, but they are pretty impressive in the uncut version. Some of the death scenes include: a pick axe through the chest, one guy gets his head boiled in a pot of boiling water, pick axe through the chin, shot in the face with a nail gun and of course the awesome scene in which an old lady is killed and put in the dryer. These aren’t all of the death scenes, just the most memorable ones. In most of the 80’s slasher movies the acting isn’t very good. Well, in My Bloody Valentine the acting is very average, not good but not really bad either. The script is well written and the score is pretty good. The setting is what really makes the movie so good. Most of the movie takes place in a long dark mining shaft. Where there are plenty of places for a killer to hide.

I really don’t have much to complain about with this one. I wish the acting would have been a little better and the soundtrack wasn’t very good. A little T&A wouldn’t have hurt anything either, but it’s certainly not a necessity.

Bottom line is that My Bloody Valentine is a fun and fast paced horror movie that every fan should have in their collection. If you haven’t seen the movie or if you haven’t seen the uncut version, you need to buy a copy and watch it as soon as possible.
